The best time for a Bosphorus sunset cruise, month by month

The short answer

The latest sunset of the year falls on 26 June at 20:42, and the earliest on 5 December at 17:37. Between them sits a swing of just over three hours.

Most people assume the extremes land on the solstices, on 21 June and 21 December. They do not, and the December gap is the wide one: the earliest sunset arrives more than two weeks before the shortest day. If you are booking for early December expecting a late evening, the boat will already be back at the pier by six.

Our departure is tied to the sun rather than the clock. Boarding is 90 minutes before sunset so the boat is in open water when the light turns, which means a July departure and a December departure are three hours apart on the timetable and identical in what you actually see.

Which months give the best light

May, June and September are the best of the year, and September is the one we would pick. The air is clearer than in high summer, the haze that flattens July afternoons has gone, and the water is usually calm. Sunset is still late enough for a comfortable evening.

July and August give you the longest evenings and the warmest deck, but also the most haze and the most other boats. Still good — just not the sharpest light of the year.

October and November are quietly excellent and almost nobody books them. Low sun, long shadows on the water, empty decks. Bring a jacket; the wind off the Black Sea has an opinion by then.

December to February the cruise runs when the weather allows. Sunset lands between 17:37 and 18:54, which makes it an afternoon trip rather than an evening one — and the city lights come on while you are still on the water, which is its own thing entirely.

Weather is the real variable

The Bosphorus has two winds: the poyraz from the north-east and the lodos from the south-west. The lodos is the one that cancels boats — it builds fast and pushes a short, awkward swell up the strait. Winter has more of it, but it can arrive in any month.

This is why our cancellation terms exist in the shape they do: free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and if the captain calls it off for weather you choose another date or take a full refund. We would rather move your booking than take a group out in a lodos.

If your trip is short and you only have one possible evening, book the earliest evening you can and keep the last one in reserve. If the weather turns, you still have a night left.
