Public ferry or private boat? An honest comparison

Take the public ferry if you just want to see the Bosphorus

The city ferries run the same water we do. They pass Dolmabahçe, Ortaköy, the bridge, the Rumeli fortress and the villages on both shores. For the price of a city transit fare you get the view, and it is a genuinely good view. If your question is only "how do I see the Bosphorus from the water", the ferry answers it and we would rather tell you that than sell you something you did not need.

What you accept in exchange: the ferry leaves when the timetable says, not when the light is good. It is busy, the good spots on deck go early, and it does not stop for you. In summer the mid-afternoon crossings are hot and crowded. None of that matters if you are sightseeing on a budget — it matters a lot if the trip itself is the occasion.

What a shared cruise buys that the ferry does not

Our sunset cruise is €40 a person and the entire product is one decision the ferry cannot make: the departure time is set by the sun, not by a timetable. Boarding is 90 minutes before sunset, so the boat is in open water when the light turns. That time moves by more than three hours across the year, which is why it is calculated per date rather than fixed — there is a full month-by-month table here.

You also get a seat that is yours, a boat that is not full to the rails, and a crew that stops the engines when the light is best rather than pushing on to the next pier. On a ferry you are a passenger; here the trip is the point.

Whether that is worth the difference depends entirely on why you are on the water. Sightseeing — ferry. An evening you will remember, a first night in the city, an anniversary — this.

When private charter is the cheaper option

This is the part people get wrong. Private charter sounds like the expensive choice, and per boat it is: €200 per hour with a two-hour minimum, so €400 for the boat, and €250 per hour in the sunset window between 17:00 and 22:00.

But it is priced per boat, not per person. For four people a private charter is more than four shared tickets. For ten people it is roughly the same. Past about ten guests, chartering the whole boat costs less per head than buying individual seats — and you get your own route, your own music, your own timing and nobody else on board.

So the honest rule is: small group, take the shared cruise. Group of ten or more, ask us for the charter price before you buy separate tickets. We have talked people out of buying twenty individual seats more than once.

The costs nobody lists

Getting to the pier. Kabataş is on the tram and funicular lines and easy from Sultanahmet, Taksim and Beyoğlu; if you are staying on the Asian side, add the crossing time to your plan.

Food and drink. The ferry has tea and a simnit stand. A shared sunset cruise is drinks on board, not dinner — if you want dinner on the water that is a different product and a different price. A charter is yours to cater as you like, which for a group is often cheaper than a restaurant with the same view.

Cancellation risk. Weather cancels boats. Ours is free to cancel up to 24 hours before, 72 for charter, and if the captain cancels for weather you choose another date or a full refund. Before you book anything with anyone, find out what happens when the wind picks up.
